SWITZERLAND
Serif Basaran was born in Switzerland in 1975 and completed his primary and secondary education there. He moved to Istanbul with his family in 1991. Serif Basaran settled in Australia and started his own coffee shop in 2002 after completing high school, university, and military service in Istanbul.
AUSTRALIA
Having gained his initial café experience as a franchise, Serif Basaran received his first coffee training from Paul Basset, the 2003 World Barista Champion. Between 2002 and 2007, he actively participated in café management as well as the opening of several different branches and various coffee training sessions.
TURKIYE
Serif Basaran was invited to Turkiye for a coffee fair in 2007. During this process, the idea of taking Turkiye to international coffee platforms gradually took root. In this direction, as a first step, he brought coffee enthusiasts together in a forum he named “Kahve Yıldızları” (Coffee Stars). Later on, in 2011, he established the Coffee Factory brand with the aim of providing high-quality fresh beans, good equipment, and pre-sales and after-sales support to coffee enthusiasts and business owners. Serif Basaran served as the SCAE Coordinator for Turkiye between 2007 and 2011. He set the standards for espresso-based beverages in Turkiye and endeavored to raise the quality bar through training. In 2008, he received the “Best Coffee Trainer” award among 1900 members at the event organized by SCAE in Copenhagen (Coffee Excellence Award). For the past 17 years, Serif Basaran has been actively serving as a jury member in coffee competitions (World Barista Championship) organized worldwide by SCAE. In addition, he has shared his experiences with coffee enthusiasts through workshops at fairs. In 2008, upon hearing that the name of a neighboring country would be used in international competitions planned for Turkish coffee due to political and economic reasons, he took on the role of General Director after international correspondence, lobbying efforts, and persuasion tours. Despite pressure from sponsors for 4 years, the name of the neighboring country was not accepted, and the competition was registered under the name World Cezve/Ibrik Championship.
